Frequently asked questions

:

The weight loss results seen in clinical studies have achieved significant and sustained weight loss over a period. Some patients lost over 15–20% of their initial body weight with mounjaro in combination with healthy eating and activity. Individual results will vary due to lifestyle and individual response.

:

Mounjaro is typically only prescribed to adults who have:

  • A Body Max Index (BMI) of 30 or above, or
  • A Body Max Index (BMI) of 27 or above with weight-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes

You’ll need to book a consultation with a qualified prescriber who will confirm if you meet the eligibility criteria.

:

Patients must be over 18 with a BMI  and have four or more of the following diagnosed conditions to qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Heart disease (cardiovascular disease)
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)

:

It is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection) once per week (into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm). Most people self-inject after being shown the correct technique by their clinician.

:

Treatment is usually initiated at a low introductory dosebefore being titrated upwards. The exact dose and schedule will depend on factors such as your medical history, response, and tolerability. A tailored plan will be provided by your clinician.

:

Yes, Mounjaro must be kept in the fridge, where the temperature is between 2°C and 8°C before first use. Once you start using the pen, you can store it for 6 weeks either at room temperature (below 30°C) or in the fridge. Do not freeze Mounjaro.

:

The most common side effects of Mounjaro are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and loss of appetite. These effects are generally mild and improve over time. Rare but more serious risks will be discussed during your consultation.

:

Mounjaro is injected once a week. It is important to inject on the same day each week, so pick a day that suits your schedule and set up a reminder on your phone or calendar. This will help your body to adjust and will also be easier to remember.

Friday or Saturday are often good choices, as this means that any side effects you experience (e.g. nausea, fatigue) will have time to subside, and you can adjust your schedule without the pressures of the workday. For anyone prone to binge eating or overeating over the weekend, injecting near the end of the week (e.g.Thursday or Friday) can also help to reduce cravings, allowing for more mindful consumption over the weekend.

On the other hand, other people prefer early-week injections (e.g. Monday) in order to reinforce good habits and create structure throughout the week.

:

When selecting an injection site, ensure you select a location where you can see the pen window and it is easily accessible.

  • Select an injection site: on your upper arms, stomach or the front of your thighs. It does not matter which injection site you select, you can choose whichever one is most comfortable for you.
  • Rotate your injection site every week. This will help to minimise skin reactions.
:

Needles after use must be placed in your sharps bin (or suitable sharps container) and then cover with the pen cap after injecting the dose for that day. Store in the refrigerator until the next dose is required. Finished pens can be placed in general waste.

:

In individuals with personal or family history of thyroid cancer, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). MenoClinic clinicians will take a full medical history to assess any contraindications before commencing treatment.
